What We Do

Appalachian State University Student Goverment

THE GOVERNMENT IS US; WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT, YOU AND I.
— THEODORE ROOSEVELT

The Student Government Association is a group of passionate individuals that serve Appalachian State University. Our aim is to be the student voice and the student change on campus. We are an organization that exists to better this school.

What we're about

ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

We are committed to making sure that our student fees of $2,629 are spent with student interests at the forefront. We want to achieve active engagement with the town's affordable housing committee due to high housing costs for students. Also, we must convey to the Board of Governors that as students, we want to see a prioritization of funding academics over salary increases for administration.

EQUITY

We want to achieve campus wide equity by advocating for more handicap accessible services and infrastructure, implement a system that allows preferred names on university ID systems, and advocate for on campus early voting sites. It is important for us to support Appalachian's Diversity initiative in our strategic plan drawing a focus on retention, as well as enrollment numbers.

CHANGE

We are committed to ensuring that both safety and freedom of speech is protected for all community members. We plan to conduct departmental and support service student surveys to solicit feedback on how to better serve students. Also, we are devoted to enhance SGA visibility and transparency in order to inform the student body on initiatives we are taking to better our university.

HEALTH & SAFETY

We plan to focus more efforts on educating our community on the importance of suicide prevention training and initiatives, along with promoting sexual assault prevention initiatives. We see the need and are researching the feasibility of expanding Health Services and establishing SANE Nurses. We will work to improve the infrastructure of the university to make campus more appealing and safe.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

We want to improve student life by working with the administration and athletics to discuss the feasibility of having football tailgating hours extended, improve parking congestion by collaborating with the physical plant to establish additional student parking, and partner with the registrars office to allow transfer students to register for classes based on previous college credit.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

We must continue advocating for various means of public transportation, as well as more vegetarian, vegan, organic and local food options in dining halls and markets. Additionally, it is important to us to to prioritize achieving the University's Strategic Plan goal of reaching a 90% diversion rate by 2020 through additional marketing and educational efforts.
