Ayako Nakano

Hi everyone! My name is Ayako Nakano  (She, Her, Hers) and I am serving as the Chief of Staff for the Howard/Dawson administration of the Student Government Association (SGA). I’m a senior, majoring in history, with three minors in political science, philosophy, and global studies. During my time at Appalachian, I have served as a senator in SGA representing honors and academics, but particularly focused on encouraging civic engagement, and advocating for students from marginalized communities. Also as a senior, my honors thesis is on the history of higher education in the United States, with a concentration on the efforts in North Carolina to combat the privatization of our public university system.

While campaigning with Jalyn and Kendrick, the portion of our mission statement which resonated with me most stated, “We need students to have their voices revitalized in the decisions that are made on our campus, and it is our belief that there needs to be changes brought upon the university to become more conscious of the financial and mental well-being of students, faculty, staff, and their families above all. Among the students we exist to represent, as we have in our times as student leaders, we most passionately strive to represent those who have been silenced-- those facing financial struggles while attending this great institution.“

Looking forward to meeting many of you throughout the year, and please feel free to contact me at any time!
